32Data Science — Intro
Hi everyone! My name is Kyle and I’m a second year at The University of Warwick, studying Data Science.
“Wait a minute, what’s Data Science?”
For those of you who don’t know, Data Science is essentially using scientific methods/algorithms to produce data-inspired solutions to real world problems. These solutions could be in form of computer programs or even improved business decisions. Either way it’s a really fun field that combines computer science, math and statistics with many other sectors.
“Thanks for that random piece of information. What am I doing here?”
I haven’t been too happy with my course because it doesn’t feel like I’m studying Data Science; it feels more like I’m studying “Statistics and Computer Science”.
Now I know what you might be thinking,
“Didn’t you just say data science is a some combination of statistics, computer science and math?”
Yeah, data science is a combination of those fields.
“Okay then, what’s the issue?”
My issue is that the classes I take aren’t specialised for Data Science itself; it feels more like we’re learning about mathematical theories and some old person’s computer algorithm, rather than learning about how to identify problems in a business or how to approach data science problems.
“Why not just get some practical experience then?”
Way to state the obvious… I decided to start this blog series “32Data Science” to document my journey and hopefully help people learn about Data Science👍🏾.
“What’s up with the 32?”
Currently the 32 doesn’t mean anything, my hand slipped whilst I was typing and put 32 there. The 32 sounded kinda computery so I left it there. I might try and do 32 posts or something like that.
“What can we expect from 32Data Science?”
- Informative posts to explain the basics of Data Science eg. Like what is a Data Scientist?, The Data Scientist Approach, Debunking Data Science Myths, etc…
- Practical posts where I put this information into practice on random datasets
- Miscellaneous things that are somewhat related to data science
Thanks for reading!
